Bunker Numberplate - SAR South African Railways Conventional South African Railways steam locomotives were never provided with front numberplates - always a problem when trying to identify engines from photographs! However, an exception could be found with the Beyer-Garratt types, where the leading and trailing articulated units carried small plates on the coal bunker/water tanks - on both the 3'6" gauge and narrow-gauge systems. HERE IS A GREAT RARITY . An original bunker numberplate from the 2'0" gauge class NG/G13 2-6-2+2-6-2 Beyer-Garratt - SAR No. NG.50. This locomotive had been delivered by HANOMAG ( under works number 10598/1928 ) and entered SAR service on 15th Sept. 1928. It operated on the Otavi line in South West Africa (Namibia) in the 1930s but ended its working life at Port Shepstone (Natal) before being withdrawn in June 1974. It was later sold to a private owner and exported during 1977 to Texas (USA) - where it is still believed to be maintained in working order. The original cabside numberplates of this locomotive incorporated the spelling error "Afrikanse" ( as did the GF locos produced by the Hannover works ) but in later SAR service it carried peculiar "E50" replacements (cast at Pietermaritzburg, using moulds designed for electric locos!).
