Terry Zug, author of "Turners and Burners: the Folk Potters of North Carolina" credits Burlon Craig (born 1914 - died 2002)with having been the single remaining link between the Catawba Valley potters of today and the heritage of traditional folk pottery that went back 200 years in that region. For those who love the dazzling effect of blue rutile, the 1980's face jug up for auction today is a special treat. In the sunlight, the effect of the blue rutile mineral content produces the pottery equivalent of an "Aurora borealis" display, which I've tried to capture in several of the photos. Other highlights of the piece include the applied eyebrows decorated with incised furrows, the six china plate teeth, the evenly-applied glossy glaze with its high content of crushed glass, and the expertly formed center-ridge handle. Condition of the piece is truly superb with no cracks, chips, or hairline fractures. Burlon Craig used centuries-old wood-firing techniques and he did not bisque fire his pieces prior to the wood firing, so it is actually not unusual to find drying lines in many of his wares, but this face jug is free of any such lines and is one of those fairly rare B B Craig pieces that one could describe as being in truly mint condition. (Bright spots in the photos are caused by reflections off the glossy glaze and are not present in the piece itself). The piece stands about 10 1/2 inches tall, with a maximum width of about 7 1/2 inches from the outside of one ear to the outside of the other. This wonderful Southern folk art face jug is signed with a crisp, clear example of the "B.B. CRAIG VALE N.C." stamp (see photos). The combination of the very abundant blue rutile and the exceptionally fine condition and execution of this piece could very well serve to enhance its value over time, and in the meantime you'll never grow tired of observing this jug in the sunlight. Offered with no reserve and an extremely low opening bid for a wide open auction. I accept money orders, personal checks, and PayPal. T will be a $12 charge for shipping by fully insured UPS Ground for this item, and the face jug will be carefully bubble-wrapped and double-boxed to ensure safe delivery. I'll contact the winning bidder by e-mail shortly after the conclusion of the auction. Good luck!
