Terry Zug, author of "Turners and Burners: the Folk Potters of North Carolina" credits Burlon Craig with having been the single remaining link between the Catawba Valley potters of today and the heritage of traditional folk pottery that went back 200 years in that region. The 1980's vintage piece up for auction today is a lot of fun - Burlon's piggy banks (which aren't that easy to come by these days) started off life on the potter's wheel as a jug form, but rather than applying a handle, Burlon applied four little feet, a pair of eyes, and a slot for coins. You actually could use this as a bank for dimes, as they are small enough to be able to fit back out through the opening in the pig's "snout", but with Burlon's pieces going up in value, it's probably best to keep this pig away from all metal objects, including the monetary type. The pig, when standing on its four feet, has a height of just over 4 inches and a length of about 5 3/4 inches. The glaze is a rich glossy brown Albany slip. (Bright spots in the photos are caused by reflections off this glossy glaze and are not present in the piece itself). T is one lighter spots in the glaze from Craig's finger w he held the piece while dipping it in the Albany slip, a few flecks of white quartz in the clay as commonly seen in traditional Catawba Valley pieces, and a very short drying line visible on the unglazed rear of the pig (i.e. on the base of the jug form), but condition is truly superb and just as when removed from the kiln, with no cracks or chips. This wonderful piece of Southern folk art is signed with the "B.B. CRAIG VALE N.C." stamp (see photos). Offered with no reserve and an extremely low opening bid.
