Terry Zug, author of "Turners and Burners: the Folk Potters of North Carolina" credits Burlon Craig (born 1914 - died 2002) with having been the single remaining link between the Catawba Valley potters of today and the heritage of traditional folk pottery that went back 200 years in that region. The artistry of the huge Burlon Craig swirlware floor vase up for auction today represents an excellent example of that heritage. This is a piece from the 1980's that showcases Burlon's skill and mastery when he was still at the top of his game. I acquired it for my collection about 7 years ago from a fund-raising auction in support of a North Carolina museum. The vase is expertly potted with a nice ovoid shape and is decorated at the shoulder with incised horizontal lines as well as an incised sine wave. Also note the raised middle ridge on the four shapely handles. The swirl on this piece has nice contrast between the light creamy color and the darker grey (with perhaps just a hint of an olive tone), and is nice and even from top to bottom. T is a clear glassy glaze that gives the piece a nice glossy finish. The floor vase stands 16 3/4 inches tall, and has a diameter of 11 inches at its widest point. Condition is superb and just as when removed from the kiln. The glassy glaze has the crazing or "crackle" as made (and as always seen with this finish), and t are some of the small glaze "pops" and very minor imperfections that one virtually always sees with Burlon Craig's work, with his start-to-finish traditional potting methods and a wood-fired kiln, but this is a phenomenal example of this form and would be extremely difficult to improve upon. The floor vase is signed on the bottom with Burlon's initials "B.B.C" (for Burlon Bart Craig). Offered with no reserve and an extremely low opening bid. I accept personal checks, money orders, and PayPal. T will be a $15 charge for shipping by fully insured UPS Ground for this item, and the floor vase will be carefully bubble-wrapped and double-boxed to ensure safe delivery. I'll contact the winning bidder by e-mail shortly after the conclusion of the auction. Good luck!
