Silverplate butter dish with hinged lid, made by Southington Cutlery Co probably between the 1890s and about 1915.Dimensions: about 6" tall x 7" deep x 9" wide. The lid has been engraved with the name, "Steeg." The design resembles hand-hammered metalwork. The piece bears two stamped marks on the underside: "SOUTHINGTON / CUTLERY Co." and "Triple Plate" (arranged in circular and concentric fashion - see photo); and the number "2126" (probably a model number). A knife accompanies the butter dish, marked "Rogers / 1881." It appears to be of similar vintage to the dish, but obviously not original to the piece. The knife measures approximately 6-3/8" long. The piece is in very good to excellent condition, with no noticeable damage (major dents, deep scratches, patches or repairs) beyond some light surface scratches from regular use and polishing. T are some knife scratches on the insert. The finial, feet, knife brackets and hinge are all present and do not appear to have been replaced or repaired.
