C 1800 CARVED GOLD GILTWOOD GESSO OVAL MIRROR FLOWERS ANTIQUE CORNUCOPIAS W FRUIT, WHEAT, FLORAL, URN DESIGN What a fabulous find this is...a circa early 1800's oval gold giltwood and gesso mirror...very similar to one found on page 667 of "American Antique Furniture" by Edgar G. Miller, Jr. which is shown below...difference is an urn for the top pediment vs an eagle in the picture in Miller's book. It is described like this "No. 1220 is an oval mirror in which the frame is formed of two cornucopias which are joined at the top and the bottom. The mouths of the cornucopias are seen to be filled with fruits and vegetables and are connected to each other by strings of flowers upon which an American eagle stands with outspread wings."T is also a footnote in his book which refers to "a mirror of this type on the frontispiece of "Antiques" October, 1929". The mirror is very old and the glass is very thick as shown from the rear below. It is in very good condition. The back panel which protects the mirror is a wood panel. This rear board used to be one piece but has split through the years. T is an old repair on the rear as shown. Measurements are as follows:Height = 25"Length = 27 1/2" is a rare chance to pick up an 18th or early 19th century period mirror with an unusual look! This mirror will be packed safely and shipped via UPS ground read more
