A very rare Empire patinated and ormolu mantle clock that belongs to the group of clocks originally designed by Deverberries and commonly referred to as 'blackamoor', 'au bon savage' or 'pendules au savage'. In this example the female figure, representing America, with original patination, porcelain eyes and glass earrings sits atop the clock while casually resting the point of her spear on the top of the patinated Cayman's head. She is partially clad in a feather dress and headdress, has ormolu bracelets on her legs and arms, wears a double necklace and carries her bow, quiver and spear. The Cayman, with sharp silvered teeth and an ormolu tongue wraps it's tail around an ormolu tree with patinated leaves and ormolu berries. The whole arrangement sits upon a patinated shaped base with ormolu mounts that stands on six ormolu toupie feet. The finely lettered porcelain dial has Roman numerals, 15-minute marks, an engine-turned ormolu bezel and nicely cast ormolu hands. The eight-day twin-barrel movement still retains its original silk-thread suspension and strikes on a bell. This model's original drawings are dated January 22, 1799. Deverberrie chose the Cayman because it is indigenous to the American continents. The porcelain eyes, glass earrings and patination were used to give the figures a more lifelike appearance. This combination along with the chosen themes distinguishes this group from the others produced in the period. Several of the individual parts of the figure have the casting mark AF. We assume this to be the bronzer or foundry mark, but have yet to identify it. For a more detailed description of Blackamoor clocks see French Bronze Clocks, pg.140
