Large living/coffee table, circa 1950. 59"Lx32"Wx13"H. This is a quintessential George Nakashima free-edged table of hand-picked burled English oak. It is distinguished by two rosewood butterfly keys, an underside butterfly, four rosewood dowels and one splayed leg set with his curved and wedged support out of walnut.
George Nakashima's deep understanding of "modern" is displayed in his articulation of natural form. Designing in the streamline, molded-plywood Eames and Moderne aftermath of the Machine Age, Nakashima quietly heralded the organic. , he used his signature butterfly joints on selected fissures, while leaving one heavily burled top fissure open in its natural glory, secured underside by a butterfly key of oak (see photo detail). The piece is framed by hand-angled cuts to better portray the sapwood, oak burl and grain -- and by Nakashima's regulation modernist supports of blending hardwood. Condition is good, structure strong -- with some light wear and a half circle mark, a finishing nail and two or three minute paint splatters -- a request for Nakashima Studios' woodworkers refinish has been initiated and recommended to the buyer after purchase (though not necessary for any structural reason). A Manhattan NY interior designer purchased c.1955 from the original client. The Nakashima Studio Archives in PA are incomplete for these years, but George Nakashima's daughter, Mira Nakashima, verified this piece by photo in August 2006. Similar table sold at recent auction for approx. $155,000.00.
