NOTE : This shawl is worth AT LEAST 6 or 7 times as much as the price of the opening bid. Understatement !!! This antique shawl from Delhi, INDIA was imported into the United States in the late 1960's in the luggage of a young couple -- they married shortly tafter and the woman wore the shawl to their wedding. (So goes the family lore.) That's why I'm estimating the date of this late-1960s shawl as 1967 -- the Summer of Love seems appropriate given the legend of the shawl, don't you think? Personally, I can't imagine wearing this shawl to a wedding, because wearing this shawl involves a kinda high-maintenance act of will (specifically, the will to pay ongoing attention to detail while you're wearing it; more below). The shawl is so drop-dead gorgeous that the "maintenance" is well worth it in most social situations, but I wouldn't want to be wondering what my shawl was "up to" during my wedding. The REASON I'm saying this is a "high maintenance shawl" is because the magnificently beautiful thing is COUCHED ALL OVER ITS SURFACE with THREE different types of metallic cord ; i.e., not only is the shawl LARGE (86" X 43"), but the weight of the metallic cord makes it a bit HEAVY , too.
