This is a very nice partial set of chisels in the original box, with two very nice labels telling about the history of several companies and two makers. Basically the "C.E. JENNINGS" mark is not only a maker's name, but a trademark name as well. While to outside end label states "C.E. JENNINGS CHISEL SET BEVELED CHISELS 1/8-2 INCHES NEW YORK NEW YORK U.S.A.", the inside label states another company's name "THE JENNINGS & GRIFFIN MFG. CO. YATESVILLE, CONN., U.S.A.. The inside label also mentions another name "ONE SET MERRILL & WILDERS SOLID CAST STEEL SOCKET FIRMER CHISELS" and also declares another trade mark "GEO'S WILDER" which is a Warranted trade mark, and declares "ONLY THE BEST MATERIAL USED" to the left of the circular trade mark. It seems that there was several companies, and individual owners, who having separate facilities, and manufacturing some of the tools under their combined trade mark name, but didn't necessarily make all the tools under the trade mark at any one particular facility. Charles.E. JENNINGS & Co. indeed had a facility in New York N.Y. from 1878-1923. His trade mark was the arrow head like you see on these chisels. It appears that Jennings & Co. also had plants in CT, and N.H. around 1901, but later became more of a tool dealer than a toolmaker by the 1920's period. This helps to explain why there are read more
