E. C. MIDDLETON 1864 ORIGINAL CHROMOLITHOGRAPH GEORGE WASHINGTON.This print in frame is 22 1/4" by 17 1/2" overall. The print, from the back, measures 19 1/4" by 14 1/2". The sight size, from the front, is 16" by 13".E. C. Middleton was one of the original chromolithographers in America. His work was highly prized from the very beginning. He opened his business as a "Portrait Publisher" in 1861. His works included portraits of famous historical persons from the colonial era to 1860s contemporary portraits of famous persons. In 1867, Middleton sold his business. During the six short years he owned his studio, his work was widely respected and highly desirable. A century and a half later, his achievements are, perhaps, even more revered! Chris Lane of Philadelphia Print Shop has am excellent blog "Antiques Print Blog--E.C. Middleton's chromolithographed portraits" which is a must-read for anyone who has ever seen or wanted a piece of Middleton's work.This portrait of George Washington is based on one of Gilbert Stuart's paintings. It is in its original frame, held together with the original square nails. There is a partial paper label which reads "A. (N?) C. BONTH manufacturer Oval & Square (Frames?)
