Main Street, Buena Vista, Coilorado, Mt. Yale in the distance." AMERICAN NEWS CO., NEW YORK, NY; LEIPZIG, BERLIN, DRESDEN, GERMANY. QUARTO-CHROME. Published by S. Dreyer & Son, Buena Vista, CO. #E 3107. Great early 20th century chromolithographic postcard of a setting along the lines of these older railroads. Scene depicts a rooftop view of Main Street in the downtown business section of Buena Vista, Colorado on the routes. Some early prospector pushed up the Arkansas River in 1859-1860, and found gold among its pebbles and rocks. The first claim was staked in a tavern north of Buena Vista in 1860. The railroads, once they were founded in Colorado, began looking for a way to reach the mines of this region. The Denver, South Park & Pacific made its way over Trout Creek Pass c. 1880 to Buena Vista, and then pressed on to the Alpine Tunnel and west of the Divide. This and other routes of the line were taken over by the Colorado & Southern Railraod in 1898. Following the decline of precious metal mining, the opening of molybdenum mining in Climax to the west in the mid-20th century provided work for significant numbers of Chaffee County residents. Buena Vista is today known as the whitewater rafting capital of the United States, and is also home to a great many other outdoor recreational activities. Tourism is a big industry. Great blues, greens, reds, golds, grays and browns. Fine detail and tones, photo and lithographic work. A find for Buena Vista/Colorado & Southern/Denver, South Park & Pacific/Railroad collectors! Good condition; slight to moderate corner and side wear with corner bends and isolated thumbtack hole as well as occasional specks and scattered printing anomalies, back slightly fading with scattered moderate ink transfer from another of the same card and specks as well as blemishes. What appear as specks above the mountains on the front are actually printing anomalies. Divided back, postally unused. Image brighter and clearer than scan.
