c1800 MAP OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA DESCRIPTION A beautiful map of the United States (thirteen states only) "A Map of the United States of America, with Part of the Adjoining Provinces from the Latest Authorities", originally engraved by Thomas Conder (1746-1831). This 'pre-Louisiana Purchase' shows the United States as it looked at the end of the 18th century with the geographical borders of the time. It includes territory west as the Mississippi River , including the Western Territory , Country of the Six Nations (beginning in Ohio), Kentucky (within wrong borders) and Tennessee ; as far north as the tip of Lake Superior including Upper Canada, Lower Canada and New Brunswick . The remaining territory is shown as Indian territory, with the names of Tribes printed on the areas w they lived. Just third of the nation had been founded at this time. In 1787 the U. S. Congress created the Territory Northwest of the River Ohio, a political entity that included all of the present states of Ohio , Indiana, Illinois, Michigan , and Wisconsin , as well as a portion of Minnesota . According to the organizing act, three to five states were to be created from this vast area after passing through a period of territorial government. The process of dividing the region into territorial government had begun with the creation of Ohio in 1787, followed by Indiana in 1800, Michigan in 1805, and Illinois in 1809. All those states are not identified. Shown West and East Florida. Cities, frontiers forts and geographical features are all included.
