This exceptional oil on canvas is attributed to William Collins (1788-1847) . This pastoral scene depicts a young couple, holding hands. As was typical of Collins' works, this scene depicts two ordinary, working people going about their business in the course of a normal day. This particular work is rather sweet, as it shows a young couple in love. She holds a basket in her right hand and he is holding a bundle of evergreen branches. They're walking along a rugged waterfront (oceanfront) with enormous cliffs in the background. Canvas measures 19.5" by 24" and frame measures 26" by 30".
Additional images forwarded upon request. Ornate, gilt wood frame is likely original to the work. Frame carries a nameplate with the name "W. Collins". This work is being sold on behalf of a dealer in Manhattan who purchased the work in 2002 at an estate sale in the Hamptons on Long Island, New York. Previous owner is believed to have purchased the work at a Christie's auction in the 1960s. Please note the "CHRISTIES...P" stamp on the rear. William Collins R.A. was one of the best known artists of his day. He painted more than 200 major works. He was known for his scenes depicting fishermen, shrimp-catchers, boats and nets, stretches of coast and sand, and, above all, rustic children in pastoral settings. He was elected full member of the Royal Academy in 1820, and apart from two years in Italy, he exhibited there every year from 1807 until the year before his death in 1847. His patrons included King George IV , the Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel , four Dukes, numerous other aristocrats, MPs, industrialists and members of the clergy. Much that is known about him comes from the two volume work published in 1848 entitled Memoirs of the Life of William Collins, Esq., R.A. by his son, the novelist Wilkie Collins (1824-1889) . Contained in the appendix of his biography are the descriptions, buyer names and sale prices for dozens of his father's works. A review of this list suggests this particular painting may be the one entitled "Welsh Peasants Crossing the Sands to Market", which was said to have been completed in 1835, exhibited at the Royal Academy, and which was purchased by R. Colls, Esquire for 115 gs. Collins' works are held in numerous museums around the world, including the Getty Museum , The Royal Academy of Arts , the Tate Gallery , and the Victoria and Albert Museum , among others. Collins' son, Wilkie (1824-1889), was a popular and commercially successful author who was a friend and business associate with Charles Dickens . (Wilkie Collins was named after a friend of the family, Sir David Wilkie , also a member of the Royal Academy.) William's other son was the artist and writer Charles Allston Collins (1828-1873) .
