Up for auction we have a mid 19c Chinese carved ivory sewing or netting case complete with its original ivory implements. This netting or bodkin case was produced in Canton, China during the height of the China Trade Era around c1850 for export to the West. These cases were offered alone and in opulent gilted lacquer sewing boxes. This particular one has been carved in deep relief depicting pairs of phoenix birds, dragons and with many types of birds in flight all amoungst a cloud carved background. T is a central cartouche that was left unmonogramed having a nice flower pedal edge. The details are just superb from the bird's feathers to the fine scales and claws of the dragons. The fitted interior contains (8) oringinal tools or implements used for the art of tatting. The color tone and patina are wonderful and still very sharp. Condition is excellent with no cracks, losses, repairs or restorations, the top section fits tight and screws together smoothly only having a very small chip to the outside rim of the top and two super fine short age lines at the bottom rim, otherwise perfect. Length 6-1/8" x Diameter 7/8". This ivory netting case would be a wonderful addition for ones collection of Asian art and ivory sewing implements.
