This auction is for a rare stein signed Burley & Co and decorated to commemorate the annual Harvard-Yale Football game. The stein measures 5-3/4 inches tall to the top of the thumb rest, approximately 4-3/4 inches tall to the top of the lid, and is 4-1/2 inches wide including the handle. It is made white milk glass with a pewter rimmed lid. There are two flaws, (1) the lid is loose and wobbles on the handle, (2) there is a spider on the bottom. (See photos). The decoration is also in excellent condition with little or no wear. Below a rust and gold pennant is the football cheer, "Rah, rah, rah! Rah, rah, rah! Rah, rah, rah! Yale!," on one side, and "Rah, rah, rah! Rah, rah, rah! Rah, rah, rah! Harvard!," on the other. There is also a pennant on the lid. There is a lithophane on the bottom of the stein picturing two young German women filling a beer mug. The spider on the underside does show through slightly. (See photo) The stein is signed Burley & Co. Chicago. Burley & Co was a Chicago retailer from 1883 to 1923, who purchased steins from Villeroy & Boch (Mettlach). The first Harvard-Yale football game was held on November 13, 1875. Please scroll all the way down the listing to see the photos.
