For your consideration we have a great pair of c1900 Chinese ivory carved phoenix birds on wooden stands. This pair of phoenix birds were produced in China around the turn of the century c1900 for the export market. T are many different styles of these birds on and off the market, having this style being the most accepted and desireable. These were designed to be used as a pair due to the way that the birds were positioned in opposite directions.The workmanship and attention to detail was executed very well showing great feathering and flower head carving. Each bird has inlaid coral eyes and long scaley looking legs. Both are carved from one solid section of elephant ivory showing a nice creamy color along with a subtle patina and having good weight. I have removed the stands to show the impressive cross hatch graining as well as the bold growth rings. Both signitures to the bottoms are deeply incised and then lac filled to be seen much better. Condition to both is excellent having only one small leaf tip missing from one bird next to the top flower head. Otherwise t are no other chips, cracks, losses or repairs. Height 9-7/8" x Width 2-3/4" x Depth at base 2-1/4", total height with stand is 11-1/2". A great opportunity for one to add a wonderful pair of large ivory carvings to their collection.
