The former name of Sanandaj was SENNEH. Sanandaj has a population of about 750,000 people and lies between two mountains, Abidar and Kochka-Rash. Sanandaj has many historical monuments and buildings, including the Divan Moshir Building, which dates back to the Qajar Era and serves as the judiciary headquarters. Built as a representation of the seven firmaments of heaven, it has seven courtyards, each with a separate pool. The Moshir Divan Building is regarded as an example of the Kolah Farangi style of architecture. The main part of the building is a terrace with Orossi windows, a beautiful ceiling, and two columns made of slab stone. In this complex, elements of European architecture are immaculately integrated with Iranian Style. The entrance gates to the courtyards of the building used to be open all day so that people could come in and fetch water. In the past, Sanandaj was divided into the governor's quarter, the residential quarter, and the economic quarter and its first structure retains a combination of ancient Iranian and Islamic architecture in which the builders imitated the architecture used in Isfahan. Because it is at the center of Kurdestan Province, Senneh holds a bazaar as well as many state buildings and mosques in which is probably why at one time that it used to be an important economic hub. The city bazaar used to incorporate all production and economic branches and it served the city and surrounding villages. Compared with other regions, Sanandaj used to export important goods and possessed many wealthy merchants and families, but the rapid change in communications altered Sananja's traditional web. The buildings surviving from these wealthy merchants and families evidence the city's past affluence. In relevance to their carpet weaving, physical characteristics of pieces have changed over time. Before 1940, patterns generally featured a Gol-i-Bolbol (flower and bird) design. After this time, Sanandaj (Senneh) rugs and carpets have Herati designs and are of the best quality among Kurdish Rugs. The pattern is almost always geometric and is similar to Bijar rugs, with hexagonal medallions. Some carpets have concentric medallions with a single diamond medallion in the center on a detailed background. Another design woven by Sanandaj (Senneh) weavers is an all-over boteh. These rugs are of excellent quality. The older ones before 1940 are extremely valuable and durable. The majority of Sanandaj (Senneh) rugs and carpets are vegetable dyed. Sanandaj (Senneh) rugs and carpets come in different size, but the majority of them range from small to mid-sized dimensions up to 8x10. On occasion, you can find larger rugs up to 10x18 feet in dimension and even runners. Dark red is the predominant color, with an ivory forming a beautiful contrast. The most common background colors used in Sanandaj (Senneh) rugs are reds, navies, blacks, browns, beiges with yellows, oranges, and ivories. The warps of the foundation are mostly cotton; the wefts are either made cotton or wool. Weavers in Sanandaj (Senneh) use Turkish knots even though the asymmetrical knot (also known as Persian or Senneh knot) was named after this city. Sanandaj (Senneh) pieces are the best in quality of Kurdish tribal wool rugs. The Persian rug is a tradition that has survived for a period of over 2500 years.
