Chinese hand Knotted pile carpets have been an important artistic medium for more than two and a half thousand years, but relatively little time and energy have been devoted to their study and appreciation. They have a long history as treasured works of art in China and have been found in tombs that date as far back as the third century BC. During the Wei dynasty carpets can be seen depicted in Chinese stone carvings, and during the Tang, Song and Yuan periods they can be seen in Chinese paintings, but no actual carpets survive from these times. The oldest complete surviving Chinese carpets are extremely rare and were made for the Chinese Imperial palaces in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.
