(NOTE: THIS IS A 7-DAY AUCTION) From a fine Tucson estate some years ago and undoubtedly a treasured bring-back from some long ago Indian Detour is this charismatic I believe circa 1920's or possibly very early 1930's Hopi carved cottonwood Katsina or Kachina, the construction and posture fully indicative of the pre-war tribal making. Conceptually the Katsina comprises a clearly earlier century tribal aesthetic and exhibits very good age; this is unarguably a far cry from typical and more contemporary slick and wholly visitor-oriented "action" examples from the post-war era often seen and meant for some unknowing day visitor to Flagstaff or Tuba City...those can sometimes be quite attractive, but not in the same way. The compelling tight-armed stance and pigment decor is delightful; the whole configuration speaks to the 1920's and depression era. This could have been made for tribal use or for a period visitor...whatever the case, it will turn heads. Use the pics to see that this is absolutely not some recent replicated copy or other current reproductive pastiche, nor even an old but slightly later example of the more mundane tourist type; neither is this beauty something you will readily find poking about some Tucson antiques shop or anyw else for that matter.
