Tabriz, the second largest city in Persia, has long been renowned as one of the leading carpet weaving centers of the world. The Turkish knot is used today although the Persian knot is extensively used in antique pieces. The warp and weft are of cotton with the exception of a few outstandiong pieces which use silk. Tabriz is also famous for its silk prayer rugs and for its copies, finely executed in the 19th century under Eurpoean influence, of famous old hunting carpets. Secular pieces will usually have a medallion center and a tree of life design is common. Antique Tabriz carpets are much sought after by collectors and most Valuable.. Haji Jalili is well known master weaver all around the world especially among high-end antique rug collectors. He made some of the finest rugs in 19th century (1800-1890) in Tabriz. He was originally was from town of Marand (40 miles northwest of Tabriz).
