The knot may be open either right or let. The foundation on the antiques is mostly wool but on 20th century rugs cotton warps and wefts are most common. Knot counts are fine, ranging from 120 to 275 kpsi. The Persian rug is a tradition that has survived for a period of over 2500 years. You multiply both numbers on the warp and the weft from back of the carpet. For example 10 knots along the warp and 12 knots along the weft would give a KPSI of 120. RAJ is the number of knots on warp or weft per 7 linear centimeter. Persian rugs usually count with RAJ instead of KPSI. But for your convenience we use KPSI here. keep in mind higher KPSI does not necessarily mean a better quality rug. the number of kpsi is only depended on technique of the weave.
