Eleven Original Vintage Black Panther Party Handbill~Flyers ca. late 1960's-early 70's ~~~~~~~~~ Among those mentioned: Huey P. Newton, Bobby Seale, Ericka Huggins, Angela Davis, Muhammed Kenyatta ~~~~~~~~ Eight measure 8.5" x 11"; three fold out to 8.5" x 14" ~ a few are printed on both sides ~condition is very good to excellent, clean, with some slight age darkening to a few edges ~~~~~~~~~~~~ These flyers are from a long-defunct African-American bookstore in Philadelphia. The owner was a Socialist, and very active in the left wing and radical political life of the city. Two of the flyers focus on the Philadelphia Police, then spearheaded by Commissioner Frank Rizzo (who went on to become Philadelphia's mayor). He was known across the country for his harsh tactics when dealing with civic unrest. In 1970, the Black Panthers declared war on police officers nationwide and called for a "revolutionary people's convention" to be held in Philadelphia. But Rizzo raided the Panthers' Philadelphia headquarters in August, confiscating shotguns, rifles, and pistols. The Panthers were stripped naked and searched. The next day, a photograph of the Panthers' bare buttocks moved across the Associated Press wire.
