C19th Spell / Witch Bottle French Witch Collection !!
This stunning bottle was part of a collection of artifacts and occult tools that were amassed by many generations of a family of French Celtic Druidic witches. Please see below item description for further details. The piece first came into the family's possession in the early 1920's after it was given to them as a gift by the new owners of an ancient cottage located in the nearby village of Chaviloy Milon who had discovered it whilst they were in the process of renovating their chimney wall. The family then placed the artifact in the main altar room and would on occasions lend it to those persons that sought their aid with the instructions that the bottle should placed directly by the front door of the dwelling in order to facilitate the flow of all the blessings that the gods and goddesses , the land an the elders that have passed before bestow , in severe cases of negative energy creating a disruption in one room of the home , it should be suspended over the room's entrance point. The bottle was originally crafted from a stunning medium olive glass in an early two piece molded form with hand applied string rim lip , together with a base kick up . The symbolism to the piece is fascinating not just for it's history but also because of the rich traditions associated with these types of bottles within the area which I believe is best illustrated by a "Recap" as it were of a conversation that I had with Muriel on the subject of spell bottles and the belief that is held by many people across the world that tell that they are only used for negative purposes , or protection against witches that mean you harm / cursing purposes . Her reaction was to laugh and quote one of her most frequently occurring phrases when discussing esoteric matters and certain people's reaction to them " Les personnes avec petite vision , l'esprit qu'ils ont est si étroit " Which roughly translates as " The people with only a little vision , they have a such a narrow minds " In this area spell bottles / vessels have been utilized by both the practitioners and the " Ordinary" people for countless centuries for a multitude of purposes and to this day it is quite common to enter into a home and see a bottle containing either coins , rose petals , artificial representations of butterflies , vine leaves or other talismans / totemic images placed upon a window sill to bring good fortune to the home. From removing the cork and examining the bottle's contents from above without attempting pouring from the vessel, it seems to contain walnut shells together with handcrafted iron nails, honesty seed heads, various other herbs and seed heads that I have not been able to fully identify, a portion of animal bone, fragments of early pottery, glass, primitive ( Neolithic?) stone cutting and scraping tools, etc. The bottle is in wonderful condition with stunning signs of age, wear and use, lovely quirks from early crafting (including bubbling, folding and mineral deposits within the glass construction). With slight surface abrasions, mortar encrustation, along with dull surface coating to its whole presumably from a combination of wood burning residues, soot and dust ? There is slight scorching and shrinkage to the cork. As always I have left the piece in original uncleaned condition to preserve its history. And with it measuring just under 11 inches from bottom of base rim to top of cork by just under 6 and 1/4 inches across the widest point of the body. Making This A Must For All Lovers Of All Things !! This Incredible piece of Witchcraft History was part of a collection of artifacts and occult tools that had been put together by many generations of a family of French witches . I myself was fortunate enough to be bequeathed this piece by Muriel who was the last surviving member of the family line . The lady herself lived in the same village as myself, Chaumont, close to the city Bourges that was frequented by " Les Bourdelins"...
