Antique Ibbotson Peace & Co. Rip Saw This is a antique ca. 1840's to 1850's Ibbotson Peace & Co. Eagle Works Sheffield England 28" (blade length) with nib, taper ground rip saw with a coarse 3 1/2ppi regular teeth and graduated to 5 1/2ppi at the point. I believe Robert Ibbotson, Charles Peace Jr., William Kirby Peace and Abraham Spafford were the proprietors of the Eagle Works in Sheffield. Without doing any research I'm kind of wondering if this is any relation to Harvey Peace who worked as a boy in a Sheffield saw factory with his father and grandfather. Blade is fairly straight with a slight jog at the back which doesn't affect the cut. It's been recently jointed, teeth reshaped, set and hand sharpened by myself with 4 degree rake angle. Thickness at cutting edge is approx. .038 and with set is approx. .048. Blade is clean and smooth to the touch and has a fairly even patina with very light pitting throughout but really nothing serious for a 150 year old saw. It is 2 " wide at the point and 6 1/2" at the butt end. The name is stamped on the blade as were all early saws before etching became the norm. The graceful handle is made of English quarter-sawn beech. T are some age cracks, the horns have been shortened read more
