Postal History Wonderful 1.5 page letter and stampless cover - letter written February 1 and postmarked February 7 - no year date but this is mid to late 1850s based on other covers from this group. Writer was Maggie Young with a letter header of ROSE HILL, and historic cotton plantation near Natchez, Mississippi - the postmark of this letter! Letter was sent to her uncle, Dr Walter Wade, prominent cotton plantation and slave owner near PORT GIBSON, Mississippi. It would have arrived via steamboat at the port of Rodney and traveled inland via carriage. The name "Maj Young" appears on the address panel - Major Young was the father of the writer and a close business associate and brother in law of Wade. In this letter, Maggie writes about a dance and large event at Rose Hill, family news - a marvelous letter written by a young, early southern plantation woman! A triangular red friendship seal is fully intact on the back envelope flap for an impressive touch. Postmark is a black Natchez, Mis CDS that flies off the envelope a bit along with a bold black 5 cent rate mark. Everything - letter and cover - fully intact and in excellent condition. This is one of several letters from our Wade family letter acquisition. Walter Wade operated a cotton plantation near Rodney, Mississippi. He had strong family ties to South Carolina as well. He was a slave owner and a medical doctor, with ties to Philadelphia and the east coast. Quite a bit has been written about Dr. Wade (see link below) - in the Plantation Diaries of Dr. Wade of "Ross Wood" in Jefferson County, Mississippi. /documents/academic/upa_cis/10845_AnteBellSouthPlanSerN.pdf Terms $1.00 postage in the United States, and only $ 2.00 elsewhere.
