A+ COLLECTOR QUALITY EARLY ANTIQUE WEST ANATOLIAN "HOLBEIN" DESIGN CARPET, Bergama-Yuntdag region, Circa: mid-19th century (1850), and coming in an excellent state of preservation for the collector. The exact size is: 5'-5" x 7'-6" (165 x 229 cm). This rare and quite beautiful collector carpet is woven with symmetrical knots on natural cotton warps with natural brown wool wefts, two shoots between rows of knots. All of the dyes are 100% natural and derived from plant sources with the brow dye lot being heavily oxidized. This exciting antique carpet was woven south of Bergama in the Yuntdag area towards Cal (Chal), perhaps by one of the Karakeceli tribal groups (of Turkmen origin) living in this area during the 19th century. One of the earliest known carpets with this field design is the 16th century carpet fragment in the Islamisches Museum in Berlin, Germany. A black and white photo of this carpet can be viewed as Figure 11a, page 35, in "Oriental Carpets - Philadelphia Museum of Art", by Charles Grant Ellis, 1988. In comparing that piece to my current offering, one can readily see the ancient relationship within which this design pool has exhisted in Western Anatolian village weavings throughout the centuries. Also, one must refer to the yellow ground "Holbein" carpet from the latter part of the 14th century published on page 248 of "Oriental Carpets - Their Iconography from Earliest Times to the 18th Century", by Volkmar Gantzhorn, 1998. The author has contributed a scholarly written text on these Group C II: Small-Pattern Holbein Carpets, pages 249 - 269, with other photos of Holbein design carpets resting comfortably in Museums and private collections. It is interesting to note that the author suggests a Spanish or perhaps a Armenian-Syrian origin for the so-called "Holbein" design. The present example has been well taken care of over that last 160 (+ or -) years and it comes in a rather remarkable state of preservation having medium to medium low allover pile condition with a few areas of lower pile, but absolutely NO worn areas. The top and bottom endings are original and complete. The side cord over-castings are original and complete. There are just a few areas in the field where moth grazings in the past have been expertly re-knotted by a master weaver using recycled antique wool to match the original colour palette. A few of my colleagues in the antique rug world have chastised me for offering this quality of an antique weaving on eBay auction rather than placing it with a major international auction house. I have a tendency to offer all my antique rug and carpet "finds" to the eBay audience first. If an item does not meet my meagre reserve price, then it eventually finds an appreciative new home with a collector for much more than my reserve price, but still considerable less than what one would pay at one of the better known auction houses. If you have any questions concerning this rather important and quite lovely antique West Anatolian carpet, only email Michael Phillips at: or feel free to call my studio phone at: . Please take some extra time to view all of the other fine antique rugs, carpets, and weavings of merit that I have posted exclusively with eBay auction this week and remember to bookmark my eBay seller ID: imokub2 (I am okay, you be too) to your "favorite sellers list" to see my weekly future offerings of old and antique oriental rugs, tribal bags, and other weavings and textiles. NOTE that ALL of my eBay listings come with an unconditional 100% money back refund guarantee (including ALL s/h/ins. fees) if for ANY reason the winning bidder is not happy with their purchase from me. GOOD LUCK BIDDING. Another very rare and stunningly beautiful investment grade antique weaving brought to you by imokub2. In my opinion, one of the most beautiful aspects of this carpet is the unusual border surround with a composition that I have not seen before.
