This is a very nice brass 19th century French microscope retaining most of its original lacquer, signed on the main tube "E. Hartnack et Cie, Place Dauphine 21, Paris" ; which dates it rather accurately to circa 1865. Serial number 8483 is stamped onto the inside edge of the fitted case which still has its key after 140 years! The microscope stands a little less than 8 1/2 inches when closed, has a weighted foot (removable) and and a unique, spring loaded stage for focus adjustment. The mirror is a single sided, concave element with some milkiness due to age; one non-origninal screw was added at some point to hold the mirror in place. The single ocular is unmarked; the objective lens assembly is marked with the number "4". All optics are remarkably bright and in excellent condition. The microscope is finished in lacquered brass with a painted green stage and base; the base appears to be cast iron. The original dove-tailed mahogany case has a soft fabric insert in the lid and is in very good condition with some slight marring, scuffs and dents. The case measures 9" x 5" and is 3" deep. One dozen plain glass slides from the period are included, though one is chiped and cracked. This is quite a basic model, and represents Edmund Hartnack's work after he took control of the firm from his uncle in 1860 but before he moved to Potsdam in 1870. Note that this item is rather heavy despite its size and so affects shipment costs.
