This item is a ca. 1880-90s leather tooled family photo album, with 39 family photos, 38 of the 39 being tintype photos, with the album in worn but complete condition. The album is worn, one of the two clasps is missing, and the spine cover on the album is torn vertically (see images below), but t are no other significant flaws. The 38 tin-types are likely of the most interest, and we have taken pictures of many of these photographs. The first photo in the book is a cabinet photo, and is the first photo shown below (2 boys smoking, one with a pipe, see image below), and all the rest of the photos in the album (and all the rest of the images below as well), are tin-types. The album is small, measuring about 6-1/2 by 5-1/2 inches, and is about 3 inches thick. The title page on the album shows that it was originally published by W.W. Harding, 326 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, Pa. The tin-types are of various subjects, but mostly posed portraits, as can be seen from the examples included below. Some of the tin-types have some creases, and some have some abrasion from contact with other items through the years, and I would estimate the overall quality as mostly Very Good to Excellent. One of the photos, the next to last in the string below, has a printed banner in front of the two subjects that reads, 'Meet me at the Fair', which could be referring to either the 1893 Chicago Worlds Fair, or the 1904 St. Louis Worlds Fair; the printing is so faint that I failed to see it until it showed up on the digital photo below, but one can see it clearly upon close examination. The one cabinet card is marked with a photographers name from Macon, MO, and we purchased the album in that same area at an estate auction; one would think it likely that it has been in that area since the late 1800's. Most of the tin-types measure about 2 by 3 inches, and some have been trimmed to fit an oval matted opening. One of the tin-types shows a man in a top-hat, within a drawn cartoon figure, making the picture appear similar to a Nast political cartoon from this same era (see images below). Again, we have tried to include as many images below as possible, to give bidders an idea of the diversity of these images. See images below for more details. Email any questions to us.
