The Contents : 1. A Christmas Carol One of the Most Famous Christmas Stories; the tale of Ebenezer Scrooge and the Ghosts of Christmas Past , Present and Future, with Bob Cratchit , Tiny Tim , and other memorable characters. This story is includes 8 Illustrations by John Leech . This story is a much-loved Christmas Classic. 2. The Chimes ; A Goblin Story This Christmas Story includes the plate " The Spirits of the Bells " by D. Maclise (member of the Royal Academy ); another Dickens Christmas Tale with a supernatural theme. Written while Dickens was living in Genoa, Italy he confessed that he missed the inspiration of the London streets. The story centers around Trotty Veck, a poor ticket porter, whose outlook is converted from dispair to hope by the spirits of the chimes on New Year's Eve. 3. The Cricket On The Hearth A Dickens Christmas story meant to be read in front of the fireplace with children gathered 'round. The story centers on John and Dot Peerybingle whose marriage is threatened by a wide difference in their ages. When confronted with the possibility of Dot's infidelity John consults the spirit of the Cricket on the Hearth whose chirping Dot has said brings luck. The cricket assures John that all will be well. In the end the misunderstanding is cleared up and the couple's happiness is restored. The story also contains the Scrooge-like conversion of hard-hearted toymaker Tackleton. 4. The Battle of Life Like previous Christmas books, "The Battle of Life " centers on a change of heart, but this time without the aid of supernatural beings. Doctor Jeddler's daughters make sacrifices in love which convert their father's cynical view of life. 5. The Haunted Man And The Ghost's Bargain "The Haunted Man" was the last of Dickens' five Christmas Books, originally published in December 1848. In "The Haunted Man" we find the reclusive, cynical Professor of Chemistry Mr. Redlaw. Although not a business man like Dicken's character " Scrooge " in A Christmas Carol , he is nevertheless a lonely and haunted man who buries himself in his academics. Professor Redlaw is tormented by the death of his sister and makes a bargain with a spirit to lose this memory and the pain associated with it; yet, as a result he becomes incapable of sympathy or caring for humanity. However, this being a Charles Dickens written as a general appeal for human compassion, and also being a Christmas story, it is foregone that all will end well... ** Condition ** The interior of this book is in Great Condition, but the binding has some condition issues . It would seem that this book was perhaps set a bit too close to the fireplace - the spine appears to be scorched, but only the spine appears so - the covers are untouched, though they do have some wear at the edges. There is splitting and some leather loss at the juncture of the covers and the spine - this has been closed with a little Bookbinder's Archival Quality Acid-Free Glue. The covers are firmly attached, but this must be considered a fragile binding, and treated as such. [ see the photos ] The inner Hinges are Tight. No writing. No markings.
