Cabinet photo of Prince Alexander of Battenberg (1857-1893) who reigned as Prince of Bulgaria from 1879 to 1886. Following the defeat of Turkey, the principality of Bulgaria was created by the Congress of Vienna and Alexander was chosen as prince of Bulgaria. In 1885 his army defeated the Serbs whose ally Russia forced Alexander to abdicate at gunpoint. He was the second son of Prince Alexander of Hesse and by Rhine and his morganatic wife Julie Countess von Hauke who was created Princess of Battenberg in 1858. His older brother Louis became Marquess of Milford Haven and Admiral of the Fleet in Great Britain. His younger brother Prince Henry of Battenberg married Princess Beatrice, daughter of Queen Victoria. Lord Louis Mountbatten (Earl Mountbatten of Burma) was his nephew. Prince Alexander was created Count of Hartenau after his abdication. Photo by Krziwanek, of Vienna and Ischl. This photograph dates after his abdication in 1886. VF, except for small imperfection in upper right corner not affecting picture.
