*CABINET CARD: CAMP U.S. GRANT ~ PORTLAND, MAINE ~ REUNION ENCAMPMENT. Uncommon Cabinet Photograph of the main gate entrance to "CAMP U.S. GRANT" in Portland, Maine, by local photographer, Lamson. Small handwritten notation in upper left corner: "Portland, Me. / 19, Annual Nl. / Encampmt. G.A.R. / June 22 - 27 /85 / looking East." Through the archway [under magnification] can be seen a horse-drawn advertising wagon with a sign for "Greenwood Garden / Observatory" Peaks Island. To the right of the sign, just barely visible is a tall white marble[?] monument undoubtedly in tribute to the fallen heroes born in Maine. Actually this meeting was historically known as "The 19th Annual National Encampment" of the G.A.R. at Munjoy Hill in the summer of 1885. A two-color lithograph of the entire encampment was published at the time by George H. Walker & Co. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ TERMS: NO PAYPAL Authenticity Guaranteed.
