Franz Joseph I [1830-1916] of the Habsburg Dynasty was Emperor of Austria [1848-1916], Apostolic King of Hungary [1867-1916], King of Bohemia from 1848 until 1916 and a German prince. His 68 year reign is the third longest in the recorded history of Europe. The oldest son of Archduke Franz Karl and Princess Sophie of Bavaria, he was brought up by his mother as a future Emperor. At the age of 13, he started a career as a colonel in the Austrian Army. From that point onward, his fashion was dictated by army style and for the rest of his life, he normally wore the uniform of a junior officer. In December 1848, after the abdication of his uncle Ferdinand and the renunciation of his father, the mild-mannered Franz Karl, Franz Joseph succeeded as Emperor of Austria. At his accession, the Austrian empire was in a state of revolution. Franz Joseph pacitified Italy and subdued Hungary [1849]. He was defeated in the Italian War of Liberation in 1859. In 1864, in an alliance with Prussia, he waged a successful war against Denmark, but quarrelled with Prussia concerning disposition of seized districts, bringing on the Seven Weeksâe(tm) War.
