California Chumash Indian Mortar & Pestle Today you are bidding on a Native American mortar and pestle. The mortar is approximately 6 3/4 inches at the widest point. It is approximately 5 3/4 inches tall. I brought the mortar to the local Natural History Museum w I was told that it was either an unfinished mortar or it was used to break nuts on. T is only a very tiny indentation at the top w the bowl may have been started or that as the associate curator explained to me, that it may have only been used to break nuts. The pestle is approximately 7 inches long. It looks like it was used a lot. I have not tried to clean either of these items at all. The mortar and pestle were given to my father as gifts, in the 1940's, from Native American Indians in the Santa Barbara (California) area. The Native Americans that lived were the Chumash. So, most likely, in my opinion, these items could be attributed to that tribe. I highly recommend insurance for these items. Please feel free to ask me any questions. I will do my best to answer them as best as possible.
