Historic William Randolph Hearst sponsored Citizen Markesmanship Competition Award and evidently sponsored by his then newspaper, The Los Angeles Examiner. Hearst bought the L.A. Examiner in 1903 to aid him in his run for President against Teddy Roosevelt in 1904. He was unsucessful in his nomination. This trophy / award has no date on it, but the third brass plate reads: "North American Aviation Team, Score 773 Average." I know that North American Aviation moved from Maine to Los Angeles in 1934, and assume there are only 4 plaques filled out because of the outbreak of World War Two. North American Aviation was responsible for such aircraft as the P-51 Mustang, and the B-25 Mitchell bomber. Interestingly, they had only 120 days from start to completion to develop one of the most sucessful combat aircraft in the world, the P-51 Mustang. From scratch to its first flight in 120 days says something about the U.S.A. What an accomplishment! Some of the men who developed that aircraft undoubtedly shot in this competition. The first plaque reads: "Culver City Rifle Club, Senior L Team, SC- 760 x 800." The second reads: "Searles Lake Rifle Club, Team #1, Score 1494 (avg)." The fourth reads: "LaBrea Rifle Club, Blue Team, Score 1523 (avg)." This trophy / lamp undoubtedly sat in the lobby or a display case in the building that was the Los Angeles Examiner Newspaper. It is 2 sided, and has the same 4 shooters and eagle on each side. The plaque reads: " William Randolph Hearst" on top, and "Citizen Markesmanship Competition" on the bottom. The base measures 18 1/2 wide, by 6 inches deep. It is 34 1/2 inches tall to the top of the finnial. The wood is walnut, I think, and the plaques front and back are brass or bronze. There is a crack in the top wood plate that the lamp and vertical wood is attached to, picture 9 and 10 show it, but the lamp is solid. The last 2 photos show the back of the trophy. There are 28 brass plaques in all, in 2 rows around the base. Shipping is a flat $45.00 in the Continental US. Thanks for looking.
