Early California Nocturnal Seascape ~ Nels Hagerup ~ "Moonlight on the Pacific" ~ please scroll down for more photos ~Finely painted nocturnal California seascape by well-listed American artist, Nels Hagerup (1864 - 1922). Oil on slateboard. Original antique gilded frame.Signed by the artist, lower right, "N. HAGERUP".Undated on the work itself, but circa 1910.Early label, on the reverse, for "GUMP'S - 268 Post Street - San Francisco". SIZE: Painting - 11" x 17" / Frame - 15.5" x 21.5" A fine composition and strong brushwork by Hagerup make this an very animated depiction of the Pacific Coast at San Francisco, with waves crashing on the rocks and a sailboat in the distance, as the moon is sets on the horizon. This work was probably painted just a few blocks from Hagerup's home in the Sunset District and near the Cliff House and Seal Rocks at the northern part of Ocean Beach. The painting has the luminous quality that is seen in the best Hagerup works and the paint is beautifully applied over the whole surface of the board, with areas of thick impasto. The details of the water dripping down from the rocks from the last wave, the brushwork in the waves themselves, and the beautiful application of paint to create the moon make this a fine example of Hagerup's work. This painting is in excellent condition with no damage or restorations. read more
