This hand-written diary for 1894 belonged to someone who worked at John M. Safford's saw and planing mill in Cambridge Vermont, and also some entries mention working for Edmunds doing similar work i. e. matching boards. T are entries written for virtually every day, recording weather as well as whether the writer worked that day, when he was paid, when he paid his own board, etc. A more interesting entry is the one for 29 January: Pleasant. Did not work the shop. Did not [illegible]. Went up to Frenches to get some clean shirts Started for Burlington at 3PM. W. G. Sawyer went with me got to Burlington 8PM Edmonds and E. W. Clark joined us at Bethel Had a jolly night of it Pulled Edmonds out of bed Stayed [?] to the Van Ess House[?].
The next day, 20 January, part of the entry says: Snowed hard all day Eat breakfast at 8. The Encampment open at 9. A good report from officers. After dinner election of officers Charles Branch of Newport. Research online reveals that this is a reference to the 27th Vermont GAR Encampment. A more typical entry is 27 January: Pleasant. Worked for Safford in the shop butting and tanning ash. Many entries would probably be of interest to someone who is more familiar with the town history than I am & who might know who the people are. For example, 19 April says "Pleasant. Sat around the house and store all day. Mr. Sawyers folk went to eat - new [illegible] at B. Taggerts". T are numerous references to a store. Also for a while t are entries mentioning working in a ditch & laying pipe, perhaps putting in drains or some other civic project? T are many entries that are worthy of speculation for putting the pieces together & getting a sense of this man's life. On 12 June he writes "Forty [illegible] years old today. one year ago today Imogene and Iwan in Rutland today I am alone What a change." So did his wife leave him? Or die, perhaps? The diary measures 6 1/2 inches X 3 inches and has space for two days on each side of each page. T are also pages at the end for extra information. The diary is hand-written in pencil and is mostly legible, but some of it is a little hard to decipher. Condition is very good overall with just some darkening from age and minor edgewear. Please email with any questions before bidding. High bidder pays $3.00 for media rate shipping; CT residents pay 6% sales tax. Priority mail, insurance and international shipping are available at cost. Thank you!
