The camp started in 1911 and is (was? -- unsure of current status) located northeast of Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. It was named after Colonel William B. Travis, the commander of the Alamo who died with Davey Crockett and Colonel Bowie during Santa Ana's seige in 1836. This 337 page book thoroughly describes the camp, the leaders, the men, the organizations, and the life in the camp as it trained artillery men, infantry men, depot brigades and others for fighting or support assignments in WWI. The book will satisfy those with a direct interest in Camp Travis, Texas and/or military training during WWI. It has many articles, photographs, drawings, poems, humorous stories and cartoons illustrating a myriad of aspects of camp life and training.
