Campbell-Stokes Pattern Sunshine Recorder
The Campbell-Stokes Sunshine Recorder is used to measure the duration of "bright" sunshine. It actually measures the direct light from the sun. It does this by focusing the sun's rays on a card on which it burns a trace when the solar radiation is sufficiently intense. The instrument consists of a glass sp, 92mm in diameter, held at opposing poles by two supports which form the ends of a graduated meridian arc. The arc is movable so as to allow setting the axis of the sp at an inclination angle. The sun's rays are focused sharply on a card held in the grooves. As the sun moves through the sky, its image moves along the card leaving a blackened trace. The assembly is supported on a square, metallic base which can be mounted to a fixed pedestal by means of four bolts. This instrument is simple and robust. The sunshine recorder was invented by John Francis Campbell in 1853. The basic unit is still in use today with very little change! It is probably the most common recorder in use today, along with the Marvin recorder. The unit was manufactured in 1975 and comes with the original owners manual. The highly polished glass sp is in excellent shape with no pitting or dark spots. The unit itself is in great shape and would be a conversation piece all by itself! Replacement cost is $2,000. While recording charts are not provided, they are readily available. Low reserve, we'll start this one at $1.00 and see w it takes off to! Serious bidders please. If you want a scientific instrument that you can guarantee no one on the block has, this is it!! Terrific piece! We'll carefully package your purchase and send it insured to your location. Good luck
