The Campo del Cielo is a polycrystalline coarse octahedrite. It has Widmanstatten bands of 3 mm. In general, coarse octahedrites have Widmanstatten bands of 1.3 - 3.3mm. The Widmanstatten patterns are unique structures of long nickel-iron crystals within the meteorite that form when the molten metal cools slowly (over several million years). The presence of the patterns can be used to determine if a piece of iron is from a meteorite or is terrestrial in origin. In general, Campo del Cielo crystals (as with the one above) are prepared by taking a whole Campo meteorite, freezing it in liquid nitrogen and shattering it. The meteorite shatters along its octahedral planes, showing the crystalline structure inside. The important minerals are: Kamacite, Taenite, Plessite, Schreibersite and Troilite. ****Shipping - United States only****Shipping cost is $1.95 via USPS first class.
