BELL CANDLESTICK TELEPHONE with Accordion Shelf
Offered as a set, this phone is marked 151-AL, and "Pat in USA": Jan 26 1915 Jan 1 1918 May 7 1918 Sept 21 1920 The accompanying shelf is unmarked, has the original black finish, and is suitable for mounting to a roll-top desk. Measuring 18" unextended, it can be extended to 38" by pulling the bakelite knob. The resting tray measures 6.5" x 10 ". The telephone is original even down to the leather bottom pad (not felt) and the black paint, although it does show modest thinning down, from normal use, to the brass on the trunk. The cord(s) may have been replaced at one time, and the jack is missing. The line is tri-color and one could assume the phone will still work. This equipment was nearly bulletproof. The jack undoubtedly was removed because it was identified as "Bell System, Not For Sale". This was an era when Bell owned and controlled everything within the utility (translation: monopoly) and no individual was allowed to own the equipment. This gorgeous piece was retrieved from the Union Pacific office in the Patagonia RR Depot prior to 1940. Please note, this is not a "buy -it-now" offering, and we will not separately sell the phone and the shelf. It is offered in the auction format as a set.
