Offered this week, is a magnificent Covered Casserole just in time forthe Holidays. The transferware is nicely done by master potter Thomas Mayer, circa 1820 to 1835. It is usuable and just plain beautiful if only displayed!
MEASUREMENTS: 7-1/2" Tall from Base to Finial Tip. 10-1/2" handle to handle; inverted rim with ledge on which the lid sits. Nearly 3" deep. Would make a great mashed potato bowl for a large number of Thanksgiving guests. 9" width on the handleless side. Footed base with blue glaze pooling. This base measures 4-3/4" x 4-3/4". The finial or knop alone is 1-1/2" tall. CONDITION: The LID is perfect with no damage, no repairs. T are kiln dust specks underglaze and the finial, shaped like a breaking wave, is absolutely perfect! The base or bowl of this tureen is so lovely and appears perfect. The first picture shows a surface flake which is not seen looking down into the bowl. The transfers, colors and ground are nearly as new. A few misplaced tiny cobalt blue dye spots can be seen in the well. Upside down, another old surface flake is seen on the cream underside handle (not seen when in use...please email for close-up pictures). The glaze is wonderfully shiny without the usual rubbing wear, scratches or discoloring. Just a gorgeous piece in Medium to Darkest cobalt blue. PATTERN: Even if one doesn't know the pattern, pottery or earthenware by Thomas Mayer is instantly identifiable: artistry in the potting, high standards, beautiful application of the transfers and a high-quality feel and appearance. This pattern, "Canova", is pictured in ROMANTIC STAFFORDSHIRE CERAMICS: with values, by Jeffrey B. Snyder, pages123, 124,& 125. It is of course also found in Petra Williams, STAFFORDSHIRE: Romantic Transfer Patterns, Cup Plates & Early Victorian China. Ms Williams gives an earlier date of 1826 to 1835. The scene in the bowl well is different than that on the lid. Both have boats, temples, lush foliage and huge urns. The inner rim and the finial and upper rim of the lid are decorated with sprigs and tiny bell flowers which give the appearance of a Gothic arch. The rims are gently scalloped w/ the rim edges decorated w/ tiny triangles. T are four rim cartouches of boats, botanicals and urns, each separated with pleasing floral arrangements. The blue is dark cobalt blue to medium blue to powder blue. This is a 3 Color blue and white transfer piece. My pictures have more green in the blue than does the real item. If you collect this medium blue Staffordshire transferware, this blue will fit right in with your other pieces.
