The canyon Diablo is classified as a coarse octahedrite. In general, coarse octahedrites have Widmanstatten bands of 1.3 - 3.3mm. The Widmanstatten patterns are unique structures of long nickel-iron crystals within the meteorite that form when the molten metal cools slowly (over several million years). The presence of the patterns can be used to determine if a piece of iron is from a meteorite or is terrestrial in origin. The following minerals have been reported with this type of meteorite: Cohenite, Chromite, Daubreelite, Diamond and lonsdaleite, Graphite, Haxonite, Kamacite (the most common component), base metal sulfides, Schreibersite, Taenite, Troilite, and Moissanite (the second hardest natural mineral).The most well known shock effect with this meteorite is the transformation of graphite in the meteorite to diamond and lonsdaleite. ****Shipping ****United States: Shipping cost is $1.95 via USPS first class.
