Publisher’s blind-stamped cloth, clear gilt title on spine, original yellow end-leaves with un-cracked hinges. Prior owner’s script signature on title page with date 1836. Complete with moderate intermittent foxing on engraved plate leaves. A very scarce publication and especially in this complete and original state — in very good condition. Back explored the vast region from Great Slave Lake along the Great Fish River to the shores of Chancery Inlet. The expedition started out as a privately-financed and government-assisted rescue mission for John Ross’s missing Northwest Passage expedition, but grew into its own exploring expedition. Back gained considerable experience as an Arctic explorer through his participation in Franklin’s two overland expeditions, and became one of the first competent artists to penetrate into the Canadian Arctic.
