This no reserve auction is for an extremely rare, original covered butter dish from the 1870s. It is the beautiful pattern known as CARDINAL (or Blue Jay, Cardinal Bird), as referenced in Early American Pattern Glass by Reilly and Jenks. It is attributed to the Ohio Flint Glass Co. of Lancaster, OH, circa 1875. This is the rarest version with the names Red Bird , Pewit , and Titmouse written below the three different birds pictures on the base. It has wonderful illustrations of the birds on the cover and the base. It is 4 1/4" tall to the top of the finial on the cover, and 5 3/4" across the widest point. It is in excellent condition, free of chips or cracks, with only a couple tiny flea bites on the inside of the edges. A great piece of early American glass history - will look great in your home or collection. Guaranteed old and authentic! !
