Caesaraea Maritima, Judaea, Volusian, 251 - 253 AD O: Radiate bustright. R: Altar, palm and olive trees behind. Rosenberger 188 12.7grams, 23 mm This is a coin from a very important ancient city. Today, Caesaraea Maritima is an extensive series of ruins along the coast of Israel half way between Tel Aviv & Haifa. The site was build by King Herod in Roman times using the latest in building technology. The harbor showcases the Roman's ability to use a water-proof, pourable mortar, like concrete. There is a restored Roman theater which is used today for plays and concerts and an impressive aqueduct. Herod is known as one of the great builders of the ancient world. He also built Masada, and the controversial platform in the center of Jerusalem known as the "temple mount", and the associated Jewish temple that was destroyed by Titus in 79 AD.
