Outstanding cold painted Austrian bronze sculpture of an Indian scout by Carl (Karl) Kauba. The bronze is mounted on the original black marble base. This example is fully colored, with every surface painted. The Indian's buckskin clothing is brightly painted in shades of blue, red, yellow and beige, while his skin is painted in a copper shade. The rifle is detailed in brown, black, grey and gold. The ground is softly washed in greenish-grey. The bronze base is signed "C Kauba" and bears the marks 90131, Austria, and the foundry mark (a "KP" inside an incised diamond). This example is a choice example of Kauba's work, being a good bit smaller than most of his bronzes.
Carl Kauba, 1865-1922, is one of the most important sculptors of subjects from the American West, although he never visited America. He studied American Indian and Western artifacts sent to Vienna by his American friends. Kauba worked by sketching the idea, then creating his own clay model. He used local foundries in Vienna to produce his bronzes by the lost-wax method. Origin: Vienna, Austria, circa 1890. Condition: mint, except for a 1/8" area of paint loss on the headdress, a 1/16" area on the edge of the fringe on the outstretched leg, and a 1/8" area on the underside of the outstretched foot. Size: 5" x 3-1/8" x 3" high.
