A charming oil on canvas painting by Danish painter Carl Viertel. The painting is a double portrait of Admiral Solling's daughters. They are pictured with a bird's nest, young birds and mother bird. Note the younger daughter who is holding the mother bird in her hand. The painting is an original and dates to 1814. I wish I had more info on the little girls. The frame I believe is original to the painting, but note the more modern nails holding the painting in the frame. The canvas and stretcher are both old and intact. The painting could use some minor restoration-- a good cleaning would expose the background trees-- though it is fine as it is. Note the three spots of minor paint loss to the canvas. There has been no previos restoration to this painting. On the back is some information from an auction sale. There is also a very old label on the back which is handwritted in Danish, and may say something about the two girls. The writing on the top of the stretcher says that the girls are Admiral Solling's daughters, identifies the artist, and the date, 1814. It appears to be original to the painting and is written on the strecher, not the frame. About the painter: Carl John Charles Frederick Viertel was A Danish painter who lived between 1772-1834. He was noted for portraits and this work was probably commissioned. He is listed in " Davenport's Art Reference amd Price Guide". Please email if you have any questions or would like more photos.
