CarlZeiss Jena Binoculars 8x30W Jenoptem Coated LensesWideView No. 3514648, Year:1968 German Made Binoculars of superb and legendary quality This is a top quality binocular that is in a very good used condition.No scratches on any lenses.The paintwork is in a very good condition with only a very few marks of paint loss. Both center focus & right diopter adjustment operate smoothly and correctly. Free from mould, fungus attack. These are a superb pair of binoculars made by Carl Zeiss the world famous German optical manufactures.The red velvet lined case is also in a very good condition - it operates correctly to secure the binoculars. The leather on the case has a slight stain to the front and some wear to the stitching (Find me a pair that doesn't). Both binocular and case straps are also in a very good condition. Stamped – aus Jena (see below)* Constructed of brass, steel and aluminum, covered with black lacquer and leather, bakelite eyepiece surrounds. Wide angle of view to aid easy object location.The Jenoptem 8x30W has been a long standing 'classic' binocular for many years! production stopped in 1991. Its equivalent value today would be about £400 These were the property of a disabled and now deceased uncle of mine, who as a result of a mining accident suffered muscular atrophy and was almost housebound, he enjoyed watching wildlife (what he could see of it), and the countryside from the back garden. Their condition is commensurate with that situation. These binoculars are both as collectable as they are usable - remarkable condition considering their age, their serial number indicates year of manufacture as 1968. * eBay is not really the place for a definitive history of the Carl Zeiss manufacturing industry but interested parties will be aware that production of Carl Zeiss products continued after the 2 nd WW on both sides of the Iron Curtain. Jena; the original site then being in east Germany (DDR) and the other production facility (liberated by the Americans) re-located to Oberkochen (aus Jena – from Jena). Thus, apart from the difference on the body marked “aus Jena” the binocular body and lenses are in all other respects identical to those models that bear the markings “DDR”. There is an authorative and in-depth account of the two Carl Zeiss companies between 1945 and 1991 in Professor Armin Hermann's book: 'Und trozdem Bruder Die deutsch-deutsche Geschichte der Firma Carl Zeiss' Sadly, as you might have guessed – it's written in German! Still, there's plenty of stuff on Zeiss out there on the web. We do not post outside of the UK as postal costs are prohibitive and in the past where items have 'gone missing' we have been unable to recover our costs. We will dispatch next day by insured post and the binoculars will be well packed and boxed. We do not regard postal costs as an opportunity to make extra money and therefore sometimes make a small loss.
