This beatifully hand carved scene of a grasshopper and cicadas measures approximately 1 1/2" high x 2" wide x 1 1/4" deep.

Mammoth Ivory

The Woolly Mammoth roamed the earth over 10,000 years ago. Long extinct, their fossilized remains are mostly found in Siberia, Russia. Due to the permafrost present caused by the cold conditions of Siberia, many pieces of fossilized Ivory will never be recovered. Carved Fossilized Mammoth Ivory is legal to own since it is not from contemporary elephants. In addition, due to the difference in bone structure of contemporary Elephant Ivory and Mammoth Ivory, trained customs agents can easily distinguish between the two just from a visual inspection.

The Workmanship

Each piece of art starts out as a recently discovered piece of Fossilized Mammoth Ivory in Siberia, Russia. From t, the Mammoth Ivory is taken to Fujian Province, China. In Fujian, each piece is carved by hand by a team Ivory Carving Masters. Each piece must take into account the natual variations present in each unique piece of Fossilized Mammoth Ivory. The finished unique work of art takes anyw from 2 weeks for small pieces up to several years for large pieces. The masters in Fujian Province have a extremely high attention to detail which can only be barely captured on camera.
